Ten detained in Ukraine, Moldova over Russian-linked plot to assassinate prominent Ukrainians

Ten people have been jailed in Ukraine and Moldova for allegedly plotting to kill prominent Ukrainian journalists, public figures and intelligence officers.

Ukraine’s Security Service of Ukraine revealed on Friday that it carried an operation codenamed “Enigma 2.0” jointly with the National Inspectorate of Investigations of Moldova’s General Police Inspectorate to neutralize the criminal network across both countries.

Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko named one of the planned targets as Andriy Yusov, who serves as the strategic communications representative for the Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate and as deputy head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Seven suspects were arrested in Ukraine during the raids. Three others were arrested in Moldova, including the organizer of the alleged group.

"The Russian side promised the perpetrators up to $100,000 - the amount depended on the notoriety and influence of the potential victim," Kravchenko said.

The network was split into two units - one focused on surveillance and the other on carrying out assassinations. Several operatives reportedly traveled to Ukraine under the guise of tourists and lived in rented apartments in various regions.

According to investigators, the suspects funded their preparations using cryptocurrency wallets and foreign bank cards. To track potential targets, they allegedly posed as delivery couriers, captured photos and videos, tagged locations on digital maps, and regularly updated their coordinator.

The suspects face charges of preparation for premeditated murder and illegal weapons. If convicted, they may face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of orchestrating the killings of high-profile military and political figures.
