Russia has foiled an assassination attempt on a high-ranking military official in St. Petersburg, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) told local media. Two suspects have been detained for allegedly trying to plant an explosive device under the unnamed military official’s car upon instructions received from Ukraine’s intelligence, according to FSB.
"The Russian Federal Security Service in the city of St. Petersburg suppressed the illegal activities of two Russian citizens who, on the instructions of the special services of Ukraine, planned to commit a terrorist act against a high-ranking serviceman of the Russian Ministry of Defense using an improvised explosive device," FSB’s said in a statement.
"The attackers were detained and confessed. The issue of opening a criminal case is being resolved," the agency added.
FSB gave further details about the alleged assassination attempt. According to the agency, investigators determined that the suspects communicated with coordinators through a foreign messaging application, expressing their willingness to carry out a terrorist attack. Acting on the instructions provided, they collected an improvised explosive device (IED) from a designated cache and monitored the area near the serviceman’s residence. The individuals subsequently placed the IED beneath the military officer’s vehicle in a public parking area. During operational search measures, officers from the FSB located and safely neutralized the device, thereby averting the attack.
