Israel issues travel warning for Azerbaijan, Georgia citing security concerns amid war with Iran

Israel on Tuesday issued a travel warning for Azerbaijan and Georgia and a number of “countries bordering Iran” ahead of the upcoming Jewish holiday citing concerns that individuals linked to or influenced by Iran could carry out “terrorist attacks” targeting Israeli nationals or Judaism.

The warning came as the joint US-Israeli war against in Iran is near its fourth year and amid the exacerbated threats by Passover and the upcoming Jewish holiday, Israel’s National Security Council (NSC) said. “Regarding countries bordering Iran (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf States), we recommend not participating in events (including holiday meals) at locations identified with Israel or Judaism, due to concerns that these will be targets for kinetic attacks by Iranian elements,” the NSC said in its statement. It’s worth nothing that Georgia, which is listed by the NSC, has no shared border with Israel.

Tuesday’s warning is a detailed update to an earlier statement from March. The previous warning issued on March 5, did not mention Azerbaijan and Georgia. The NSC has not publicly revealed the reason for including Azerbaijan and Georgia in its recent list. However, Tuesday’s statement came after claims of Iranian-linked terror plots targeting Jewish sites in Azerbaijan as well as allegations of growing Iranian influence in Georgia. It should be recalled that Azerbaijan’s Security Service claimed thwarted an Iranian-organized plot to target Jewish community in early March.
