Zelenskiy hails “brilliant” drone attacks targeting over 40 Russian warplanes

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has hailed Ukraine’s surprise attacks on a large number of Russian bombers as “an absolutely brilliant success” and “achieved solely by Ukraine”.

Writing on X on Sunday, hours after the audacious operation targeting 41 Russian aircraft in four airfields, Zelenskiy stated that this was Ukraine’s longest-range operation against Russia.

"Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk delivered a report regarding today's operation. An absolutely brilliant result. A result achieved solely by Ukraine. One year, six months, and nine days from the start of planning to effective execution," Zelenskiy wrote.

Zelenskiy stressed that his country was defending itself and “doing everything to make Russia feel the need to end this war. Russia started this war; Russia must end it.”

The Ukrainian stated that Security Service members involved in the operation were fully withdrawn from the Russian territory. The Russian defence ministry claimed in a statement on Sunday that attacks on three airfields had failed, while some warplanes at other airfields had caught fire.

Codenamed “Spiderweb”, the operation had been in preparation for one and half years and involved a complex logistic process, such as deployment of FPV drones in Russian territory, their storage in makeshift wooden houses and their deployment to designated targets via a remote controller. Zelenskiy revealed that the coordination center of the operation was located near one of the departments of FSB, Federal Security Service of Russia.
