Zelenskiy announces changes to air defense and frontline operations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has announced that changes are being made to air defense operations and to the monitoring of how drones, weapons, and personnel are supplied to frontline units.

Making a video address on Tuesday evening, Zelenskiy said  new decision would be made to strengthen Ukraine and be able to solve existing problems.” In particular, he spoke about the changes in the work of air forces, stating that in some regions “the way teams operate is effectively being completely rebuilt - interceptors, mobile fire groups, the entire short-range air defense component.” Changes will happen. This also concerns oversight of supplying the front with drones, weapons, and, most importantly, personnel.” Zelenskiy said work was also underway to train and replenish brigades. Furthermore, Zelenskiy said Kyiv was preparing for the meeting in the “Ramstein” format and the Munich Security Conference that will take place this week.

The overhaul of the air defences follows Zelenskiy’s decision last Friday about eh personnel changes in the Air Forces in some regions of Ukraine. Zelenskiy said on February 6 that the changes concern protection against Russian Shaheed kamikaze drones. Zelenskiy explained that in some areas, defense lines are built better, in some areas, more work needs to be done, and significantly. Zelenskyy emphasized that the issue is now being handled by Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, that the Air Force commander has been given further directives, and that Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces have sufficient resources and experience that can and should be expanded.

Ukraine’s air defenses have become a key element of the country’s resistance against Russia’s full-scale invasion. Since 2022, Russia has relied heavily on missile strikes, drones, and air attacks to target Ukrainian cities, energy infrastructure, and military positions, making air defense a constant, high-stakes battle rather than a background task.
