Unmanned Systems Forces of Ukrainian Armed Forces struck the Syzran Oil Refinery in Russia’s Samara region in an attack that targeted six regions, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday.
The oil refinery owned by Rosneft state oil company and nearby two power stations were likely targets of the attack on Samara region. With an annual capacity of 2.5 million tons of diesel, the refinery is the major fuel producer in the region. The facility produces fuel for Russia’s domestic market, including supplies used by the Russian army, Ukrainian military reported.
Video released in social media showed explosions and fire near the site of the attack. The strike prompted activation of air defence systems, with the authorities in Syzran issuing a drone alert overnight. Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, temporarily suspended flights at Samara’s Kurumoch airport.
Local residents reported hearing as many as six blasts, after which electricity went out in multiple parts of the city. Witnesses also reported fire engines moving toward the refinery. According to the monitoring project Exilenova+, the strike struck the ELOU-AVT-5 unit, a critical facility used to prepare crude oil through desalting and initial distillation before further processing.
Syzran oil refinery has been repeatedly targeted since Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with the production facility of the facility being hit in early 2025. It should be noted that Ukraine ha stepped up long-range drone and missile strikes on Russian energy and military facilities deep in Russia to undermine Russia’s war efforts and to disrupt oil supplies to the Kremlin’s war machine.
