A Russian military facility has been struck in border Kursk region weeks after Russia’s announcement about the region’s full liberation from Ukraine. The headquarters of the 40th Separate Guards Marine Brigade of the Russian army was targeted in Rylsk town in Russia’s border Kursk region, Ukrainian media reported on May 11.
Deputy commander of Russian army, Alexander Danilov, was killed in the attack on the Russian military facility. Being veteran of Russia's military operations in Syria, Alexander Danilov was also involved in Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine since 2022. He was commanding a Russian army unit at the time of the attack on Kursk.
The attack on Russian military facility comes a month after Kremlin claimed it regained full control of Kursk region where Ukraine launched a surprise cross-border incursion in August last year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy denied his army’s withdrawal from Kursk, stating that Ukrainian troops were holding ground in the region.
Russia has been seeking to liberate swathes of territories captured by Ukraine in Kursk by stationing hundreds of soldiers, including North Korean troops. Russia holds about 20 percent of Ukraine's territory, including the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2014.
Kyiv has sought to use captured territories in Kursk as a bargaining chip in future negotiations with Moscow, which has invaded eastern and southern parts of Ukraine since full-fledged war launched in February 2022.
