Ukraine’s top commander, the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi has said making a territorial concession to Russia in any peace deal was “unacceptable” for his country. In an interview with the Sky News on December 5, Syrskyi said “just peace” would imply the ceasefire along the current line of contact.
"Our main mission is to defend our land, our country, and our population," he said. “Naturally, for us it is unacceptable to simply give up territory. What does it even mean – to hand over our land? This is precisely why we are fighting; so we do not give up our territory,” Syrskyi said. Furthermore, he accused the Kremlin of using the US-brokered peace talks as a “cover” to while the Russian army units seek to seize more land on the battlefield. “The adversary continues its offensive, using these peace talks as cover. There are no pauses, no delays in their operations. They keep pushing their troops forward to seize as much of our territory as possible under the cover of negotiations,” Syrskyi said.
Stressing that Russian forces launch 4,000–5,000 one-way attack drones along the front each day, in addition to 1,500–2,000 bomb-dropping drones, Syrskyi said Ukrainian troops units are matching - and in some areas exceeding - those numbers.
The Ukrainian commander reminded that Russia has deployed over 710,000 troops Pokrovsk, Kupiansk, Lyman, and Huliaipole, and is losing nearly 1,000 to 1,100 soldiers a day, killed or wounded ‘and a majority are killed’.”
Syrskyi also expressed hopes that Ukraine’s Western allies would be ready to continue supporting Ukraine, because Kyiv is defending “not only ourselves but all of Europe.”
