Ukraine deploys its interceptor drones to protect US bases in Jordan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he has sent interceptor drones and operators to protect US bases in Jordan against Iranian attacks as the war in the Middle continued into its 10th day.

In an interview with the New York Times, Zelenskiy revealed that he responded to a request by the United States to help Wahington in the joint war with Israel against Iran. "There is clear interest in Ukraine's experience in protecting lives, relevant interceptors, electronic warfare systems, and training," Zelenksiy said, adding that he had received requests for help from 11 countries.

Zelenskyy said his government would explore ways to provide matériel, expertise, or training on countering Shahed drones while ensuring Ukraine’s own air defenses remain fully capable. He added that Ukraine is willing to respond positively to requests from countries that support efforts to safeguard Ukrainian lives and uphold the nation’s independence.

The protection of the US air bases in the Middle East has been high on agenda since US and Israel launched joint Epic Fury operation against Iran on February 28. Tehran responded by launching unprecedented retaliatory strikes against Israel and the US military bases in the Middle East.

The White House said last week Iran launched more than 2,000 cheap drone attacks at its neighbours. Ukraine says it regularly faces attacks involving hundreds of similar drones, at times on a near-daily basis. For years, Russia has produced several variants of the Shahed to strike Ukrainian cities, frequently deploying the loitering munitions alongside delta-wing decoy drones.

In late February, Zelenskyy stated that Russia had launched about 57,000 Shahed drones at Ukraine since February 2022.
