Russia on Sunday pounded Ukraine with a barrage of missiles and drones, targeting the country's energy facilities.
Russian troops attacked an energy facility in the Koryukiv district of the Chernihiv region at around 7 PM, knocking down electricity for over 55,000 residents, local media reported, citing Chernihivoblenergo electricity supplier. "The damage is significant," the company stated, adding that as soon as the security situation allows, the power engineers will begin emergency restoration work.
In yet another attack on Ukraine's energy facilities, Russia struck a coal mine operated by Ukraine’s largest private energy company in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region on Sunday. The attack marked the fourth strike on the company's coal enterprises over the past two months. A total of 192 miners were underground at the time of attack, prompting local authorities to evacuate to the surface. All the miners trapped underground were raised to the surface, with no casualties reported among them.
"On the eve of the start of the heating season, the enemy again hit the Ukrainian energy sector," DTEK said in a statement on X social media platform. The strike came nearly three years after Russia launched its campaign to undermine Ukraine’s power grid - a strategy it deploys ahead of winter months in an effort to plunge the country into darkness and cold.
