French President Emmanuel Macron has warned Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders that “there is a chance that the US will betray Ukraine on territory, without clarity on security guarantees,” German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Thursday.
The magazine said it obtained a leaked note from Monday’s call with several European leaders, which included quotes from several participants who voiced concerns over US stance over Ukraine war. According to Spiegel, Macron told Zelenskiy that the current phase of negotiations posed “a big danger” for him, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz adviced the Ukrainai leader to be “very careful”. Merz was also reported telling Zelenskiy that President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner who paid a visit to Moscow this week, were “playing games with both you and us.”
Spiegel reported that European leaders also voiced concerns with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb who had close ties with Trump, warning “we must not leave Ukraine and Volodymyr alone with these guys.” Nato secretary general Mark Rutte who has good ties with Trump was also quoted by the magazine that “we must protect Volodymyr”.
The German publication said it spoke to several participants of the phone call who confirmed it took place and that the remarks voiced by the magazine were “accurately produced”. None of the leaders cited by Der Spiegel has confirmed the alleged phone conversation.
Europe has been engulfed in diplomatic flurry over Donald Trump’s 28-point peace proposal to end the nearly four-year-war in Ukraine. The peace proposal has raised concerns for being drafted without Ukraine’s and EU’s input, with some describing the proposal as being close to the Kremlin’s maximalist demands. Compounding these concerns is the fact that Trump’s aide Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner visited Moscow last Tuesday.
