In first, Ukrainian drones hit Russia’s naval base near Dagestan

Ukrainian drones have struck Russia’s naval base at the Caspian Sea in the South Caucasus republic of Dagestan, local authorities reported on Wednesday. A 16-year-old girl received shrapnel wounds as a result of the attack.

This was the first attack on Russia’s republic of Dagestan republic since Kremlin launched full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

“This morning, air defense forces destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle over Kaspiysk,” Dagestan head Sergei Melikov announced on Telegram channel. Located at he Caspian Sea, the port city of Kaspiysk is located around 800 kilometers southeast of the border with Ukraine.

A Russian Telegram channel reported that four drones targeted the city, with one of them exploding. The channel said Kaspiysk was preliminarily attacked by an A-22 Flying Fox drone.” The work of the airport in Dagestan’s capital Makhachkala was temporarily suspended following the attack.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it destroyed two drones over other regions overnight without commenting on the attacks in Dagestan.

Ukrainian intelligence acknowledged it was behind the attack on Kaspiysk city, claiming that targeted fleet was involved in strikes against Ukraine, and the 177th Marine Regiment stationed at Kaspiysk had been involved in battles in the Ukrainian regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

Kyiv has kept up a persistent campaign of targeting Russia’s strategic facilities inside Russian territory and in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine.
