Estonian intelligence predicts heavy fighting in Ukraine in coming months

Head of the Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre Ants Kiviselg, said that Ukraine is likely to face intense defensive fighting in the coming months unless peace negotiations make real progress, according to Estonia’s public broadcaster ERR.

Kiviselg noted that Russian forces have recently achieved limited territorial gains and that the main thrust of their offensive on the Pokrovsk–Myrnohrad front is now almost encircled, placing severe strain on Ukrainian supply routes and making it increasingly difficult to hold those positions for long.

He added that Russian troops also stepped up attacks last week on the Vovchansk and Kupiansk fronts in Kharkiv region, near Siversk in Donetsk region, and around Huliaipole in Zaporizhzhia region. He linked this surge in activity to deteriorating weather conditions that are restricting Ukraine’s use of drones. According to him, Ukrainian forces are under significant pressure while Russia continues to enjoy advantages in manpower, artillery, ammunition and equipment, achieving local tactical successes. He stressed that the overall situation remains challenging and that the outcome of talks ahead of winter will be crucial, warning that without a breakthrough acceptable to Ukraine, the frontline will stay extremely tense and Ukrainian troops will be forced into heavy defensive battles in the months ahead.
