China supports 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine war

China has voiced support for a proposed 30-day ceasefire proposal put forward by Ukraine, its western allies and the US to end the war with Russia.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told Ukrainian media on May 12 that Beijing supports any efforts that aim at a political resolution to what China continues to refer to as the “Ukraine crisis.”

“Regarding the ‘Ukraine crisis,’ China’s position has been consistent and clear. We believe that all efforts should be directed toward achieving peace,” Lin said.

He emphacized that Beijing supports continuation of the negotiations to reach a fair, long-term, and binding peace deal acceptable to all sides.

“We have always believed - and continue to stress - that dialogue and negotiations are the only viable way out of the ‘crisis,’” Lin stressed.

Commenting on Donald Trump’s recent remarks urging major powers’ involvement in efforts to end the war, Lin expressd Beijing’s readiness to to work with the international community and continue to play a constructive role in resolving the “crisis” and achieving lasting peace.

It should be noted that China has displayed neutral stance throughout the war, despite strengthening economic ties with Russia.

Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin  agreed to deepen their strategic cooperation and vowed to “decisively” counter what they described as the United States’ policy of “dual containment” targeting both Russia and China.
