Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his official visit to Saint Petersburg, Russia on Monday.
At the meeting, Putin said that relations between Armenia and Russia are continuing to deepen. He noted that bilateral trade has stabilized, surpassing $11 billion in 2024, and reaching $4.5 billion in the first nine months of the current year. He described these figures as a positive sign that supports expectations of continued growth in the near future.
Restoration of railway connecting Armenia with Turkey and Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan breakaway region was high on the agenda of the meeting. “During our previous meeting, you raised various issues that we can work on together, including the restoration of old routes and the creation of new routes that will open the borders of Armenia. So, in general, everything is going well’, Putin said.
Pashinyan, for his part, reaffirmed that peace has been established between Armenia and Azerbaijan, saying this would create new prospects for strengthening Armenia–Russia relations.
He noted that this is already evident, as trains from Russia are now traveling to Armenia via Azerbaijani territory, calling it a truly historic development. He added that, as previously mentioned, fresh opportunities are emerging and that the time has come to restore additional railway sections within Armenia.
In this context, the prime minister pointed to the restart of railway transit from Russia to Armenia via Azerbaijan, calling it a “truly historic event.” He added that this development is creating new opportunities to restore additional railway segments within Armenia.
Pashinyan arrived in Russia on December 21 to attend session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (EAEU) in St. Petersburg.
