Ukraine, France to start joint weapons production

France and Ukraine have agreed to launch a joint weapon production, Ukraine’s defence minister said on February 9, after meeting with his French counterpart in Kyiv.

Minister Mykhailo Fedorov wrote on Telegram that the two countries have signed a letter of intent for “large-scale joint projects in the defence-industrial sector”.

“We are moving from supplies to joint production and long-term solutions that systematically strengthen our defence,” he wrote without specifying what weapons would be manufactured and when the production would start.

The two sides also discussed new shipments of French weapons military equipment to Ukraine, including Aster missiles, Mirage 2000 fighter jets and SAMP-T air defence systems. Fedorov and his French counterpart Cahterine Vautrin also discussed joint projects on government agencies and local defense companies, including testing security solutions and developing innovative electronic warfare systems.

"France stands and will remain by the Ukrainian people's side," Vautrin wrote on X on Sunday.

France announced last year that it would provide €2 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. Since Russia began its invasion nearly four years ago, France has remained a key supporter of Ukraine, offering both military aid and political support. “France stands, and will continue to stand, alongside the Ukrainian people,” Vautrin wrote on X on Sunday.

Before the signing of the defence agreement on Monday, the French delegation visited Ukraine’s combat positions where Ukrainian troops showcased French SAMP/T, Mirage 2000, and Mistral equipment.
